Greatest Play in Baseball

Introduction

Sunday, April 25th, 1976 marked the third and final game of a weekend series between the Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Dodgers. The game would take on greater significance than breaking the series tie when in the bottom of the fourth two protesters raced onto the field of Dodgers Stadium, spread out the American flag and immediately began drenchingit in lighter fluid. Cubs center fielder, Rick Monday, playing in his 11th major league season and fifth as a Cub, noticed the two, and before either could get a match to spark the flag, he swooped in, seized it, and carried it to safety in what instantly became the greatest play in baseball history.

After the game, Monday remarked, “If you’re going to burn the flag, don’t do it around me. I’ve been to too many veterans’ hospitals and seen too many broken bodies of guys who tried to protect it.
