Introduction

It was a long, tough road to NFL stardom for an undersized New Jersey native with a Fighting Irish heart. But once he grabbed hold of the Washington Redskins starting QB job in 1978, he never let go! Fighting the too-small label all the way, Joe Theismann went from Heisman Trophy runner-up, to Canadian Football League starter, to punt returner and backup, to, finally, starting Quarterback with Jack Pardee’s 1978 Redskins. After a Super Bowl championship in 1983 (Super Bowl XVII over Miami), another Super Bowl appearance (Super Bowl XVIII loss to the Raiders), Theismann’s career came to a sudden end after one of the most infamous leg injuries in history on Monday Night Football in 1985.
