This image features the New York Mets, who never finished higher than ninth place in their first seven seasons. But they surprised everyone in 1969. Led by manager Gil Hodges and Cy Young Award winner Tom Seaver, the Mets won 38 of their last 49 games to overcome the Chicago Cubs’ 9.5-game lead and win the division title. After sweeping the favored Atlanta Braves to grab the National League pennant, the Mets pulled an even bigger upset in the World Series, needing only five games to defeat the Baltimore Orioles, winners of 109 games during the regular season.
