One of Paige’s widely-quoted rules for staying young was “Avoid running at all times.” This atypical athletic advice apparently served him well, as he was considered the greatest Negro leagues pitcher of all time. He was a high-impact player in the majors as well, going 6-1 in his rookie season, at the estimated age of 48. Paige was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1971, the first African-American elected solely for his service in the Negro leagues.
